Cecily Brown (b. 1969 in London) studied at the Slade School in London and received her BA in 1993. Combining figuration and abstraction, Brown’s paintings show a great respect for the art historical canon, illuminating her reverence for artists whom preceded her while maintaining her distinct female point of view. Brown held her first solo exhibition at Deitch Project, New York in 1997 and a second in 1998. Her work has appeared at the Whitney Biennial 2004, New York; the Saatchi Gallery, London; P.S. 1, New York; The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; MACRO, Rome; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, The Hague.
