Press Release

SUSH MACHIDA

September 12 – October 7, 2012
Hours: Wednesday – Sunday | 6 – 11PM

Join us for an opening reception on Thursday, September 20 from 7-9PM

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, in partnership with Art Production Fund, is pleased to announce Las Vegas artist Sush Machidaas its current artist-in-residence. Sush has created a collaborative art space in P3Studio where guests can experience his process and discuss his inspiration as he works on large-scale pieces. Guests will also have the opportunity to tap into the emotion of their surroundings by sitting in the Zen Booth and sipping on green tea. Sush's project seeks to pull guests deeper into the mural sized paintings and help people truly experience and connect to the space on a different level.

Sush’s paintings are often referred to as “hyper stylized Japanese pop art,” since they’re illuminated by vivid colors and have a clean, contemporary finish. Inspired by elements from  nature,  Sush’s paintings reference traditional Japanese art from the 18th century, which was influenced by Zen and Wabi-Sabi philosophy.

Sush Machida Gaikotsu was born in Japan, and received his MFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and continues to live and work in downtown Las Vegas. His work is in the collection of the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, the Portland Art Museum, the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, the Phoenix Art Museum, and the Las Vegas Art Museum. He has exhibited in Tokyo, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Santa Fe. His work has been reviewed in Flash Art, Art Issues, Art in America, ArtForum, and the Los Angeles Times. He was most recently featured in the museum show Las Vegas Diaspora.

The artist-in-residence program at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas represents one component of its larger art program, in which artists create projects that are interactive and participatory, giving guests the opportunity to connect at an authentic and personal level. Developed and curated in partnership with Art Production Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to producing ambitious public art projects, it strives to reach new audiences and expand awareness through contemporary art.
