THOMAS WILLIS

RETROFIT PAINTING OF LAS VEGAS

July 15 – August 9, 2015
Hours: Wednesday & Thursday | 5 – 10PM; Friday – Sunday | 6 – 11PM

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, in partnership with Art Production Fund, is pleased to announce P3Studio artist-in-residence Thomas Willis. A unique multi-sensory experience, Willis’s Retrofit Painting of Las Vegas will engage guests through an interactive, retail store-like space and photo studio within P3Studio featuring displays and demonstrations that playfully teach guests how to “retrofit” pre-manufactured art canvases and allows them to sample the uses of the alternative paintings. Founded by artist Thomas Willis in 2013, Retrofit Painting’s mission is to expand and mobilize the use and consumption of painting through the unique brand.

Upon entering P3Studio, guests will be informed that Retrofit Painting is an American retailer that sells high quality artworks that are crafted for everyday use, both through stand-alone boutiques and online at www.retrofitpainting.com. The label’s luxury products ranging from ready-to-wear painting shoes, bags, sunglasses and hats, to other custom crafted accessories will be displayed alongside various advertisements. Guests will have the opportunity to speak with Willis and his Retrofit Painting sales associates working in the P3Studio space. The Retrofit Painting staff will be collaboratively designing and constructing painting modifications, demonstrating products and offering photo shoots with the objects. A smaller version of the project was previously installed inside the Home Depot House Residency at the 2013 deCordova Biennial in Boston, Massachusetts.

Thomas Willis was born and raised in Las Vegas. He has spent the past 10 years working as a professional photographer and manager at various commercial photo-studios. Through his art, he likes to explore his interests in retail practices, consumerism and commercialism.

The artist-in-residence program at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas represents one component of its larger art program, in which artists create projects that are interactive and participatory, giving guests the opportunity to connect at an authentic and personal level. Developed and curated in partnership with Art Production Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to producing ambitious public art projects, it strives to reach new audiences and expand awareness through contemporary art.
