WENDY KVECK: P3STUDIO

Press Release

WENDY KVECK

THE PAGEANT OF THE AMUSE BOUCHE

May 11 – June 10
Hours: Wednesday – Sunday | 6 – 11PM

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, in partnership with Art Production Fund, is pleased to announce local artist, Wendy Kveck, as our May artist-in-residence. While working in P3Studio, Wendy will examine representations of women and food as cultural signifiers by building three figurative sculptures. These columnar, cake-like structures combine references to caryatids, columns shaped like women, from ancient Greek architecture and festival pageantry with contemporary female archetypes that relate to rituals of celebration and desire. As cakes, they will be over-the-top symbols of celebration and as caryatids, they will reach ceiling height and appear to be part of the architecture, supporting the structure of the studio space, together communicating as vibrant muses. The forms will be made from a variety of materials, some of which will appear to be edible sweets, creating monuments to sensual, ephemeral experiences.

Guests are invited to participate by placing decorative elements symbolic of sex, love, friendship, parties and more onto the caryatids and reflect on their selection in guest books, making the works collective, social constructions and shared celebrations.

On June 7, The Cosmopolitan will host an artist reception from 7-9PM featuring three additional figurative “living” sculptures in reference to the ancient Caryatid Porch of the Erechtheion at the Acropolis in Athens.

Wendy Kveck is a visual artist from the Chicago area, currently living and working in Las Vegas, Nevada. Through her work she examines these representations and the relationship between visual culture and the collective psyche. Wendy is interested in food as a social ritual and ephemeral experience and the notion of performance as reflective, reactive and transformative action.

Wendy’s work has been exhibited nationally in California, Nevada, Texas, Arizona, Oregon and Illinois. She was awarded an honorarium to create a public art performance piece for the Americans for the Arts Annual Conference in Las Vegas (2007) and she was a nominee for the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award (2009). Most recently Kveck participated in the 2011 International Art and Design Exhibition in Daegu, South Korea and presented new paintings in a solo exhibition “The Party’s Over” at Kleven Contemporary in Las Vegas this past March.

The Artist-in-Residence program at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas represents one component of its larger art program, developed and local artists to create projects that are interactive and participatory, giving guests the opportunity to connect with art at an authentic and personal level. The program debuted with artist Fab 5 Freddy when the resort opened in December 2010, and since has included artists Shelter Serra, MK Guth, Luftwerk, Jerry Misko and The Bumby’s. Developed and curated in partnership with Art Production Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to producing ambitious public art projects, it strives to reach new audiences and expand awareness through contemporary art.
