Press Release

Art Production Fund and the New Museum are pleased to present After Hours: Murals On The Bowery, a public art exhibition. This group show invites 18 artists to design murals for the steel roller shutters of the shops along The Bowery. The Bowery will be the spine of the project expanding from Houston to Grand Street. Free to the public, the viewing will be after hours when the stores and Museum are closed.

After Hours: Murals On The Bowery references graffiti art, traditional mural painting and the graphic posters that ignite the neighborhood surrounding the New Museum. Store-owners were invited to collaborate on this civic project, loaning their roller shutters for the exhibition. After the designated two months, the surfaces will be painted back to grey. This project invites the public to stroll the street guided by a map and cell phone audio tour, experience the vibrancy and originality of one of New York city’s historic streets, while coming face to face with interventions from some of the world’s greatest artists. After Hours: Murals on the Bowery is intended as both a destination for a specific audience and an unexpected art encounter for the passerby.

After Hours: Murals On The Bowery will launch as the stores on the Bowery close on the evening of May 6th, to coincide with the New Museum’s Festival of Ideas for the New City.
