The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, in partnership with Art Production Fund, announce artists-in-residence Su Limbert and Sierra Slentz. Local Las Vegas artists, Limbert and Slentz, invite guests into their playful storybook world that explores the bittersweet narratives of home. This interactive installation merges a range of media into nostalgic allegories by juxtaposing figures cut from china plates and ceramic figurines with layered woodcut paintings. As with any tale there are multiple interpretations, so guests are invited to share their interpretation while creating a miniature clay home to add to the growing collaborative village. Guests are invited to explore the stories they create within their own home and community.
Su Limbert’s site specific installations explore the impact of civilization on the natural world and the contradictions of the human condition through evocative storybook narratives. Her multidisciplinary installations incorporate sculpture, drawing, painting, printmaking, and ceramics. Limbert was named among the 2012 next ten emerging artists by the Las Vegas City Life after the success of her installation, “All Is Full of Love,” at the Contemporary Arts Center. She has since held her first major solo show, “Into the Wild,“ at Blackbird Studios, LV. She currently lives and teaches high school and college art courses in Las Vegas, NV.
Sierra Slentz received her BFA in photography and studio arts from Sierra Nevada College in 1997. She attended graduate school at The University of Nevada, Las Vegas and earned her MFA in 2001. Slentz’s work draws from many places including her interests in environmental science and gardening to her childhood memories and fairytales. Her work often uses a variety of materials such as ceramic, fabric, wood, spray foam, plastic flowers, pearls, plastic birds and acrylic paint to create works that hover somewhere between a habitat & sculpture & painting. Slentz recently started casting & altering ceramic figurines to create installations that reference the human-need to interfere or to recreate perfect environments. These fairytale-like settings give the viewer an open-ended narrative, yet subtly pose the question, is it really just a story? Sierra Slentz currently lives and works in downtown Las Vegas.
The artist-in-residence program at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas represents one component of its larger art program, in which artists create projects that are interactive and participatory, giving guests the opportunity to connect at an authentic and personal level. Developed and curated in partnership with Art Production Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to producing ambitious public art projects, it strives to reach new audiences and expand awareness through contemporary art.
